ACT4CivicEducation

OUR GOAL:

Act4Accountability is raising $40,000 to pilot a two (2) month after-school Civic Education program for 200 seventh (7th) to ninth (9th) grade (Junior Secondary School) students in Nigeria.

When it comes to corruption in Nigeria, we must change the beliefs and behavior of the next generation, so  an event like #BringBackOurGirls never happens again.  The aim of the program is to instill the ideas of citizenship in the minds of students within their communities through observed learning processes.

Your donation will help us provide the following:

1. A curriculum to educate students about the democratic values of democracy, human and gender rights, tolerance, and the relationship between citizens, government, and the environment.

2. A 7-Day Teacher Intensive to train 20 teachers to effectively deliver the curriculum

3. Implementation of a three (3) month after-school program

For our calculations, we estimate the cost of this pilot program with 200 students and 20 teachers, including curriculum design & development, teacher training, materials, transportation, and after-school meals for students will be about $40,000.

Pilot breakdown:

  1. Curriculum development, instructional design, and training materials: $15,000
  2. Teacher Education Training: $10,000
  3. Implement in one school (after-school meals, student transportation, teacher compensation, and classroom supplies):$15,000

THE PROBLEM:

(Video courtesy of PBS NewsHour "Nigeria: Pain and Promise")

The absence of quality civic education instruction in public schools is one of the challenges in reversing corruption, indiscipline, and the disregard for the rules of law in Nigeria.  Civic Education plays a significant role in the development of a nation because the development of a nation hinges on good and effective citizenship.

Unfortunately, many teachers in Nigeria are deficient in knowledge of citizenship education, lack of skills to deliver the subject effectively, and have limited resources.  No nation can thrive beyond the civic values and traits demonstrated by her citizens. Act4Accountability (ACT4) wants to transform the culture of corruption in Africa.

THE NUMBERS:

"Every dollar that a corrupt official or a corrupt business person puts in their pocket is a dollar stolen from a pregnant woman who needs health care; or from a girl or a boy who deserves an education; or from communities that need water, roads and schools. Every dollar is critical if we are to reach our goals to end extreme poverty by 2030 and to boost shared prosperity.” - Jim Yong Kim, World Bank President

  • According to the African Union, corruption costs Africa $148 billion annually in development funds. This means billions that ought to support education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities are misdirected or stolen due to corruption.

  • Since 1960, $400 billion in oil money has been stolen from Nigeria's economy.

WHY SHOULD YOU DONATE?:

  1. This program incorporates the UN's Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education) and 16 (Accountable and Inclusive Institutions).
  2. This is not the traditional Nigerian after-school program, where students are taught to "cram/swot" or study large volumes of material.  Research indicates that cramming tends to result in poor long-term retention of material.
  3. The material is experiential, a process for students to develop knowledge, skills, and values based on personal experiences.
  4. Development of the curriculum will be culturally sensitive and appropriate to the community.
  5. Students will demonstrate what they have learned at end of the program in a final creative presentation of their choice. For example, a play, poem, painting, etc.
  6. We are changing the way Nigerian students learn about values by making it engaging and FUN!
